A wild type axolotl is the natural, most common colour morph of this salamander, with a mottled brown and olive green body, gold and white speckles with dark purple gills. It resembles its ancestors from lakes in Mexico City and has an ability to subtly change its colour for camouflage. Despite its natural appearance, it is often considered stunning due to the variation in its patterns and the golden ring in its eyes.  

Axolotl are generally solitary animals however, they can be kept together provided each axolotl has roughly 75 litres minimum.
