The Polypterus are relatively peaceful fish with the right tank mates, but as well as needing a big tank they also have big appetites so we would not advise housing them with tank mates that are small enough to fit in their mouth.
Plenty of hiding spaces should be provided along with a smooth substrate and a secure tank cover as they are known to escape if given the chance.
