Sponge filters are ideal filters to run in shrimp tanks, hospital tanks, small tanks or tanks with fish sensitive to high water flow or poor quality water.
Due to their porous nature sponge filters are incredibly good at accumulating beneficial bacteria at a greater number then most internal filters.
They are not sufficient to run entire tank systems with heavy waste producing fish as they are tailored at water treatment as opposed to waste removal however, they can be an excellent addition in any tank as they increase aeration and oxygenation, store bacteria to prevent harmful spikes and stop protein scum forming on the surface of any aquarium.
These filters are free-standing and come with a weighted base to enable positioning wherever necessary within the tank.
They require an air pump to run which should be matched to the size of the filter and to the size of the tank. We STRONGLY recommend the use of ‘check-valves’ which prevent tank water siphoning back into the air pump.
