How to acclimatise fish and invertebrates to their new home.
All livestock will need acclimatising as soon as they arrive - never empty the bag straight into a tank as the shock can be fatal to a lot of animals.
Open the bag as soon as it arrives.
Roll down the top few inches of the bag and float it in the aquarium they’ll be added too.
After 15 minutes of floating gradually add small amounts of tank water to the bag, roughly 100Ml every 10 minutes, keep adding tank water regularly until 2/3 of the water in the bag is tank water. This step can take anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours depending on the size of the fish, please don’t rush this step.
With the bag water now suitably mixed, empty the contents of the bag through a suitably sized net, it’s generally best to avoid mixing different tank water with your home tank. If the fish or invertebrate has barbells or bristles it is best to use a cup or jug to capture them.
Add your new fish or invertebrate to the tank, it’s advisable to turn off the lights and avoid feeding the tank for the first 12-24 hours, this allows the new tankmates to settle in without stressing them out.
Monitor your new pet for the first few days to ensure they are settling in correctly and are in good health, most importantly enjoy your new purchase.
